“If I could leave zero stars, I would. I took my sister to see Dr. Matway this morning as she is suffering with horrendous pain from Fibromyalgia and the medication regimen her Rheumatologist has her on isn't helping. Both her PCP and Rheumatologist recommended she see a pain specialist to seek out something/anything to help her. She does not take nor want to take narcotics. She simply wants to be able to function some what normally. What a disappointing experience she had with this Doctor! From the moment he walked in he seemed annoyed. He simply said, "what can I do for you", then proceeded to say list the medications she's on and went on to basically lecture her on how narcotics won't help but she can try this new drug for alcoholics that may or may not help her. He never once asked her a single question about her symptoms, what decreases or increases her pain or how long she has suffering. He asked her absolutely nothing aside from, "what can I do for you". When presented with this "new" drug, he said, "what's that look for, do you not understand"? He then proceeded to question her facial expression two additional times, when her reaction was simply a mix of pain, frustration, anxiety and hopelessness. She got so overwhelmed by his mannerisms (or lack thereof) that she had to leave the room to compose herself. When she left, he simply said, "what's that all about"? At the point I had had enough of his rudeness. I explained to him that her "looks" and reactions were simply from how she was feeling and that he was acting as if she was simply drug seeking and that his reaction was rude and dismissive. I explained that as a doctor, he should have empathy and patience with his patients and that his bedside manner isn't great. I ended up having to just walk out of the room myself because instead of explaining his behavior, he defended it. I am an RN and have never worked with nor witnessed such incredibly dismissive, uncaring and disrespectful behavior from any medical professional, let alone a "doctor"! My poor sister left that office crying and with more pain, anxiety and stress than she did when she walked in there! Bottom line, I do not recommend going to see this particular doctor as he clearly stereotypes people and treats them as if they are drug addicts simply looking for their next fix. His bedside mannerism is horrendous, the way he speaks to you is demeaning and he simply emits zero empathy or concern for his patients. Shame on you Dr. Matway. Maybe you should go back to the basics and relearn the importance of patient centered care and take another course in bedside manner! Or better yet, choose another profession...”
