Simon Shapiro, DO - Pain Management in Horseheads, New York

“It's taken me a month to write this review because I thought I could get it resolved by talking with management or a patient advocate, which neither Amber, Jillian nor the patient advocate helped. After reading the last review by Airmander, it was like it was my review except I don't have fibromyalgia and don't need a walker (yet). My family doctor suggested I see a pain doctor and referred me to Guthrie's doctors. I have only seen one in the past and the doctor was surprised I was walking upright and could sit straight due to the severity of damage to L4 and L5 after a skydiving accident. He suggested cortisone shots and started me on Tramadol, but assumed I would need something stronger if Tramadol wasn't effective. I never received the injection and didn't finish my pain medication and moved shorty from CA to NY. I don't remember much about my 1st appointment, but he claimed we came to an agreement that cortisones shots weren't an option, but he wouldn't tell me why! I saw DR. Volchko before Simon and he suggested the cortisone shot, however, they required a Covid test and I opted out. About a year later, I re-scheduled an appointment, and he was beyond rude and extremely unprofessional. He told me he didn't have to give me a reason why I was a good candidate for receiving a cortisone injection. If I told one of my dental patients that I wouldn't recommend Nitrous Oxide or Lidocaine in the injections that we give in the mouth and they asked why and I responded - " I don't have to tell you why." I'd be fired on the spot. This man isn't a Medical Doctor, he's a disgruntled med school reject DO, who is a glorified Chiropractor and has the worst chairside manner. I could go on and on, but it makes me physically sick to even think about him. And his colleague isn't any better, he accused me of faking a severely dislocated collar bone! Or it was Simon, I can't remember. They're both horrible people who hate their job.”

“Dr. Shapiro is a wonderful and caring Doctor. I feel blessed that we found him. He is a doctor who takes his time and listens to what you have to say and then comes up with a plan that works for you. He is a Dr. who thinks out of the box and just not one problem but the whole patient and talks to you about what he thinks would be best. Then he asks what you think and then he helps you figure out how to obtain that goal. He is an amazing person and I would recommend him to anyone who wants a open and honest Doctor who cares about his patients.”

“I met with him for the first time last week and all he wanted to do was dismiss my pain as a fibromyalgia flare up. I have sciatica , arthritis and a bulging disc all on my l5 and l4 and I'm having the same pains I did 2 years ago. Where due to the pinched nerve my leg kept giving way resulting in me falling several times and that was even with the assistance of a walker. He refused to prescribe me anything and no I'm not on that list of ppl who abuse drugs. He also said pain injections would only cause me more harm. Then he wouldnt even help me get a walker.. I traveled 45 min to see him and 45 min home and by the time the next day came around I was in such bad shape I have been on a borrowed walker now ever since. I have tried heat , massgers, cold packs and 10 different over the counter pain meds along witha year old script of baclofen and my current fibro meds and not one thing has helped me. Top off his bedside manner my primary was on vacation til this week so I've been suffering . Unable to sleep, shower , I need assistance even wiping myself. Can't bend over and top that off ii injured my back even more last night. Anytime I've seen a pain Dr at Guthrie they are no help at all.”
