What Patients Say
Patient Testimonials
“On May 15, 2023 at Houston Physicians Hospital, Dr. J. Cannella attempted to insert a Boston Scientific implant between my L4 & 5 vertebrae. The operation was the result from a diagnosis of Spinal Stenosis and the the implant was suggested by Dr. Cannella as the next step towards treatment. The operation was a failure! The procedure was considered "outpatient" and I was discharged the same day to recover at home. Between the parking lot and getting into my car, the implant dislodged itself from my spine. I spent the remainder of May 15th in bed in excruciating pain and could barely walk to use the restroom. On the morning of May 16th, my wife contacted Dr. Cannella's office to advise of my status and receive treatment instructions. I could not walk or stand on my own and had to be transported by ambulance the same day back to HPH-ER. An MRI and X-ray were done, and Dr. Cannella was scheduled to remove the implant on May 17th. On the morning of the 17th, Dr. Cannella attempted to remove the implant and in the process "dropped" it into my spinal canal. The resulting outcome was an emergent call was placed for a Spinal Surgeon to take over and Dr. Kim Garges answered the call from his nearby clinic office. The results of the implant removal by Dr. Garges was that severe damage was done to 2 of my nerves at S-1 & 2 and L-4 & 5 that continues today. I spent 19 days in rehab at PAM-CL hospital from the surgeries performed by Dr. Cannella and Dr. Garges... and not once, did either Doctor or their staffs (or any representative from Boston Scientific) follow-up with me or my family regarding my condition or status. I have since received excellent examination and treatment from the Neurology Doctors with Methodist - Clear Lake. In Nov. '23, Dr. Cannella called and stated that "he was an honest man and that I had a right to know what had occurred in the OR". Dr, Cannella stated that a Clinical Specialist from Boston Scientific was standing next to him in the OR and advising him regarding the technique and depth to place the implant. Dr. Cannella stated that "against my better judgment", he followed the Boston Scientific CS's instructions that resulted in the implants failure to adhere to my spine. I had been a patient of Dr. Cannella's for 4 years and had previously received 2 cortisone injections for treatment of severe back pain.. the most recent injection in Feb. '23. An MRI was done in April '23 confirming the Spinal Stenosis, and Dr. Cannella met with me and my wife to explain the implant technique. At no time during the consultation, was a spinal fusion mentioned nor was a recommendation to consult with a Neurosurgeon or Spinal Surgeon suggested. Now, I walk with a cane and continue to deal with the effects of the damaged nerves - neuropathy in both feet and bowel and bladder incontinency. I would tell anyone to get 2nd and 3rd opinions before having spinal surgery. And definitely, do Not consider having an implant placed into your back in lieu of getting a spinal fusion. Joe Schrodi”
