“When I told him the purpose of my referral from my PCP regarding the medication, we waved the idea away and said that he and his colleagues had decided as a group to no longer prescribe opioids. When I asked him why, his answer was "when I'm in surgery I want to have a clear head. I don't want to have staff interrupt me every 20 minutes telling me that a patient was complaining that a dog ate their homework." He discussed an operation whereby he implants a node at the base of the neck that sends a signal to keep the brain busy and in theory keep the pain at bay by giving the brain something else to focus on other than the pain. He proceeded to say that that procedure is all he and his colleagues have decided to focus on and that he understood my frustration but that there was nothing more he could do. When I asked him why he took the consultation and had me fill out intake forms regarding opioids, he ignored the question and kept talking about the surgery. I probably shouldn't have said this, but I did anyways: I asked, "are you doing the surgeries exclusively now just because there's more money in it?" At which point he gave me a look of death and tried to end the consultation rather quickly. He took a breath and denied the question, but the hesitation and reaction were clear and vitriolic. All in all it one of the more bizarre consultations I've ever experienced.”
