Patient Testimonials

For those of you who are in need of a compassionate doctor, I found one that not only cares but listens at Mid America Pain Clinic in Overland Park, KS.

Doctor Faulkner is the very best pain management doctor out there. He and his staff are very good at what they do. He is very kind and will tell you in detail about your condition and treatment options and makes sure you fully understand everything. He is the only doctor I have found who actually helped me with my pain. He is awesome!

Dr. Faulkner is a wonderful doctor. I've been dealing with a myriad of painful issues for several years. When I was at Children's Mercy on dialysis, a lot of these issues were ignored so I learned to internalize them. A few years after being transitioned out of Children's Mercy, these issues kept making my quality of life terrible and nothing anybody ever tried seemed to work. I saw one pain management doctor who wanted to do physical therapy which seemed entirely irrelevant to the issues I have (interstitial cystitis-like pain and severe UTIs, moderate to severe IBS pain, bad restless legs and diffuse body pain). I got out of his practice and came to see Dr. Faulkner. Right up front I was amazed by his thorough and acceptable pain contract. I love his openness to discuss the limits he has because of the CDC, while also stating that he doesn't feel like the limits will help anyone (as any pain patient can tell you, they haven't). On my first appointment, he was very understanding and accommodating. As for right now, due to his understanding and willingness to help, he's getting five stars from me. Yeah, it was a lengthy wait, but in this day and age, I am more than happy to compromise wait times for better treatment. Dr. Faulkner expects evidence, which is entirely understandable. He still treated me even though my urologist didn't send over the most comprehensive information, but the nurse asked where they can get more info from and it was as simple as telling them Children's Mercy. Simply put, if you have records to get to him, getting them to him quickly is beneficial. It'll help him and you in developing a treatment plan. One thing I found particularly superior to a lot of doctors is despite not having every record and only having a partial picture, he didn't approach it judgmentally, apathetically or with disbelief. He started a treatment plan based on what was presented and as such I was able to start something despite the timely process of getting all the records in. As of November of 2019, Dr. Faulkner is hands down the best doctor I have and have had. He shows genuine interest in my case since it is atypical and he actually talks with me about my chronic illness in a way that is very humble--nephrology isn't his specialty (obviously) and while he is still a doctor and understands it, he talks with me like I'm the professional...asking me questions instead of vice versa. It's one of those little things that I like about him. He's a diamond in the rough, really. He treats my quality of life issues Adding to my fondness of him is his activism and his transparency in discussing the lengths he goes to to try and advocate for the strained field of pain management. I've become an activist of sorts myself and have written on the topic of the opioid crisis and some misconceptions for a few of my college classes, and in particular I wrote a lengthy research essay for my English 102 class to which I gave a copy to Dr. Faulkner and he gladly accepted it and genuinely seemed interested in reading it (I'll follow up with him in December to see if he got a chance to read it ) and when I said I'm considering organizing the Don't Punish Pain Rally for KCMO next year, I believe I recall he said he'd be interested in speaking or helping in whatever ways he can. If you take nothing else from this, know that Dr. Faulkner isn't like most doctors--he's not walking around in a white coat with stoic apathy. He can be tastefully crude in discussing certain topics, and he's not afraid to criticize on some larger picture things such as the crisis in pain medicine for patients and the policies which have made the field so stressful for many doctors...even better, he doesn't ignore them.

Dr. Faulkner is okay. The appointments are rushed, usually behind, but I have been to far worse for Pain Management. My major issue is their administrative staff. Unnecessarily rude, dismissive and downright unprofessional. I "get" that they likely deal with a lot of issues, but I don't need nor deserve the general disrespect and attitude. Trust me, I don't want to talk to their scheduler any more than she wants to talk to me. I DREAD any time I have to call there. If I acted the way the do, I would not have my job. None of their system is online and scheduling is a hassle.. I recommend they record some of the patient phone call encounters for QA/QC.
